San Diego is a GREAT family town for a vacation

There is no better place for a Family Vacation. With museums, parks, zoos, theme parks and San Diego's exquisite climate makes San Diego one of the greatest places for a family Vacation!

Wild Animal Park
The San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park is home to more than 3,500 rare and exotic animals, most of whom roam freely in vast enclosures. Witness a family of giraffes mingle among the gazelles while rhinos gather at a watering hole. Observe South African cheetahs lounging on a sunny hill or gaze into the eyes of the majestic California condor. Board the Wgasa Bush Line Railway for a 60-minute tour past herds of elephants and zebras. Take a stroll to the Heart of Africa, a 32-acre-safari trail. Inspired by the African and Asian plains, the 1,800-acre Wild Animal Park offers guests an exotic safari adventure unlike any other outside of Africa itself.

San Diego Zoo
Span the globe in one afternoon, viewing rare and intriguing wildlife from nearly every region of the world at the San Diego Zoo. The 100-acre San Diego Zoo is one of only three zoos in the United States to house giant pandas. Rare and obscure animals can be found throughout lush, tropical settings such as Tiger River, Gorilla Tropics, and Ituri Forest. Guests may also come face to face with more familiar zoo critters: polar bears, camels, lions, tigers, pygmy chimpanzees, elephants, and more. Our newest exhibit is "Absolutely Apes," a tropical habitat where orangutans and siamangs live together in amusing harmony.

Sea World San Diego
There's no place in the world like Sea World San Diego. Touch and feed dolphins, count the teeth on a shark, come face to face with a polar bear. Brave the waves on the Shipwreck Rapids adventure ride. Don't miss the brand new Journey to Atlantis! Touch and feel California Bat Rays in Forbidden Reef. Watch the park transform each summer night with Mystique de la Mer. And just try to stay dry when world-famous Shamu comes a-splashing! SeaWorld San Diego-it doesn't get any closer than this.

Balboa Park
San Diego's Historic Balboa Park is located in a gentle greenbelt in the center of the city. Many of the park's classic buildings were built for the two world's fairs held there in 1915 (The Panama-California Exhibition) and 1935 (The California Pacific Exhibition). Currently, these same buildings are used for a variety of Museums and Galleries that would take weeks to explore.

In addition to the World Famous San Diego Zoo, there is The San Diego Aerospace Museum, housed in the former Ford Building. The Reuben H. Fleet Science Center and Space Theatre, the Museum of Man, in the former California Building, a historic miniature riding railroad, and the Casa del Prado, housing the Historical Society, the Museum of Photographic Arts, and the San Diego Model Railroad Museum.

San Diego Model Railroad Museum
The museum is a non-profit (501.c.3) corporation recognized by the Federal and California governments. It was incorporated in 1980 and has three non-profit organizations as principle exhibitors: San Diego Model Railroad Club (Chartered in 1938); La Mesa Model Railroad Club (Inc. in 1962); and the San Diego Society of N-Scale (Inc. in 1981). At 24,000 sq. ft., the museum is the largest indoor model railroad display in the world. The individual HO and N scale layouts are among largest of their type. Construction of the model railroads is done by volunteer club members (aprox. 300). Each club is responsible for the design, construction, funding, and operation of its exhibit. Criteria for membership in the individual clubs is determined by each club.

Feature attractions include:
  • The O Scale Cabrillo and Southwestern featuring a section of trolleys under live catenary and an operating sculpted brass fountain in front of the depot

  • The HO Scale San Diego and Arizona Eastern which has an amazing 10 foot deep Carrizo gorge model complete with the Goat Canyon Trestle. This is a model of the railroad we will ride during our visit.

  • The HO Scale Tehachapi Pass The La Mesa RR Club has done something extraordinary. This actual scale model of the Tehachapi Pass and the famous Tehachapi Loop climbs 2 stories high, and gives an amazing sense of the real thing. If you do not have time to see the real thing, don't miss this extraordinary model.

  • The Toy Train Gallery features 3 rail O and G scale at "kid height" for easy observation and playability. Lots of buttons to push for little fingers, and many animated things to see.

  • The Pacific Desert Lines of the San Diego Society of N. The layout is automated for weekday running, featuring several trains running at the click of a mouse. If you go on a Friday night or any weekend, you are likely to get a "behind the scenes" tour that will reveal the code 40 handlaid rail and highly detailed scenery of the layout. If you ever wanted to see how fine scale track and handlaid switches can make a difference in the look of the layout, this is your chance!

Legoland
If Bricks and Clicks are more your style, Legoland California is just north of the city. The park features Roller coasters Boat rides, driving adventures, and acres and acres of things built of bricks. There are so many opportunities to learn, have fun, and generally live the Lego life throughout the park.

Most of the world's orchid shows have been won by the gardens of this area, and you can acquire the offspring of these world famous plants to take home!
